The local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post (VFW) holds an essay competition every year in order to foster patriotism in today’s youth. Ms. Alstat's Jr. High and Mrs. Boaz's High School English classes once again participated in this esteemed program. The high school students wrote essays describing “Why My Vote Matters” and the eighth graders wrote essays about “Why I Honor the American Flag.” The 2018-2019 winners are Senior Lane Himes and eighth-grader Parker Sidwell.
Both students said they were happy and honored to win because they knew the competition was pretty tough. They are also proud to represent Brownstown Jr./Sr. High School.
